Training Summary
Larry has over 20 years experience working with colts, adult horses, and mules.  He
specializes in colt-starting.  He uses common sense training methods that are proven.  Larry's
philosophy is to make sure that horses are skilled, soft and supple on the ground first.  He
works to build trust and confidence in every animal.
Training Costs and Times
A typical colt-starting will average 30 days and will cost $500.00.  Larry will get the horse past
the buck- bite-kick stage.  They will know the BASICS of giving to pressure and suppleness.
However, all horses are different and learn at different rates.  Horses may take more or less
time, depending on them.
Farrier Service
Ranch Environment
Currently, only pasture boarding is offered.  Horses are trained on natural environment trails after
graduating the round pen.  There will be an arena and barn soon to strengthen the work with the
horses.
During winter months, extra boarding fees may apply for training services due to
feed costs.

"Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is
no path and leave a trail."  --Ralph Waldo Emerson
Remember the horse in "The Man From Snowy River" running right over the cliff with no
hesitation?  Want that kind of control with your horse?  Well, it comes from building trust and
respect with your animal.  If you have small children, you know that the more you work with
them and teach them, the more they trust, respect and obey you.  The same principle holds
true with equine.  Larry will work directly with owners and show them how to train their own
horse and build their horsemanship skills.

Horse training is a lot like people training.  Horses don’t just wake up one day, and say they’re
going to let a human be their leader.  They are prey animals.  They are Closter phobic with a
flight or fight attitude.  Humans are pretty much the same way.  We are the prey of the world.
We can’t stand it when someone corners us.  If we don’t get our way we will fight.  If we can’t
win we will run from trouble.

Prey:  Horses are preyed upon by their surroundings also. They may find themselves taking a
different path and be attacked by a predator.  This is much like humans.

Cla
ustrophobic: Some people can’t stand to be in tight places or cornered.  Horses are the
same way.  Trainers need to show the way out and make these places more comfortable
when our horses are in them.

Flight or Fight:  When you find yourself in a tight spot and can’t get out by walking away, your
next move is to fight.  Horses are the exact same.  We need to show them the way out or we
will have a fight on our hands.

“The Fix”

Horses need a leader to keep them safe.  The leader should not lead them down the wrong
path. Humans need a leader as well for the same reason.

Horses need to relax and trust their leader to know he will not put them in something without
escape.  Humans need that same type of leader.

When safety and relaxation is achieved, horses will learn there is no need to run or to back
down.  They will know to trust their leader and not be scared of the things that are in their
path.  Humans can have that same kind of trust and peace of mind with their leader as well.

We expect our horses to submit to us and be a willing partner.  Our leader Christ Jesus
expects the same from us.  He has made all the sacrifices.  All we need to do is trust in Him
to show us the way.  When we train horses, we put it all on the line and expect them to turn
away from bad things, stop when we feel out of control, and take a step when we ask them.
This is no different than what God expects from us.  Ask yourself one question: “Will this horse
give his life for me?”

In typical Larry Wood style, after only 2
hours work, this
filly allows him on her
back.  Larry is truly gifted with a horse
spirit that everyone learned from at this
clinic.

Special thanks to Rhonda Womack for
allowing Larry to work with this horse.  It
was a great clinic and Clear Fork Ranch
thanks everyone who attended and
participated.

Watch our calendar for the next clinic
dates.  Keep in mind, Larry is now
booking private lessons.
